Hey, Bill. I know many of those names, too - after 38 years with a guy who was brought up at the track, they become familiar. I remember when Mario Andretti won the Indy (don't I?). I think A.J. Foyt also ran the Indy. I'll have to check it out with the "old man." He'll know. In Balboa Park in San Diego, there is am auto/racing museum - not just the cars, but a data room with all sorts of info - and we looked there for anyone named Wohl but couldn't find one. Story goes that Henry Ford would get my husband's grandfather drunk, pick his brain and then go make changes to his cars. If I can find the picture of Arthur Wohl (uncle) in his racecar, I'll forward it to you.

And talk about the "redneck" sport, let me tell you there were LOTS of teeth at the Pepsi 400.

Until next time - Barbara

Hi Barbara,
Thanks for the note. I grew up around boat & auto racing, but a bit after the times you spoke of. Lee Petty & Fireball Roberts pre-date me. I recall the mid to late '60's with guys like "King" Richard, David Pearson, Bobby & Donnie Allison, Cale Yarborough, all long before Earnhardt & Gordon. Some forget that Mario Andretti & A.J. Foyt (who are not thought of as Nascar racers) both won the Daytona 500. Mario in '67 and A.J. in '72.

Do you remember in the early '70's the Dodge Charger & Plymouth Superbird that had the wings on the back? I see old films of races now and those old cars seem so boxy and much larger than today's cars. Of course safety has improved immensely. I think the fuel tank bladder has saved many lives.

I also find it interesting that this "redneck" sport is becoming so popular these days. As a kid growing up in California I was on the far end of opposite of the "redneck" scale, yet I loved Nascar.

I don't follow it as closely as I used to, although I enjoy the high speed oval tracks like Daytona, Talladega, & Michigan. I'm not a big fan of the short tracks, and road racing should be left to the open wheeled cars in my opinion.

Thanks again for your interest,
Bill

I'm into NASCAR and Ralph Tyko told me to look at your blog. Went to the Pepsi 400 three weeks ago and had PHENOMINAL seats at the start/finish line just under the booths. My husband's grandfather was a race car driver in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, in the 20's, and his uincle raced Indy-type cars in the 40's-50's (I think). I can never find any info on them, but my husband's cousin used to take him to the track and into the pits. The name was Wohl. Sound familiar to you?
