Vick To Plead Guilty

Filed under: NFL — Bill @ 2:07 pm

Michael Vick is an idiot, film at 11.

Just when you thought brother Marcus Vick was the family’s bad egg up steps Michael. Good news for Marcus, bad news for Michael & for every Atlanta Falcons fan.

Sometimes people aren’t happy unless they are unhappy, so they will find a way to derail their lives. Perhaps the thought of collecting that entire $130 million salary was too much for brother Michael.

It was announced today that brother Michael will plead guilty to felony charges in a federal courthouse one week from today. Exactly what he pleads guilty to is extremely important to his NFL career (or what’s left of it). Should he admit to gambling (which other witnesses have said he did) it could carry a lifetime ban from the NFL.

It’s a shame when you consider the talent possessed by brother Michael, and what this may mean to the Atlanta Falcons franchise. Given salary cap considerations the Falcons must carefully weigh how to proceed. By simply releasing Vick they would take a huge cap hit and could sabotage this team’s chances of success for years to come.

Back in April of 2001 the San Diego Chargers owned the rights to the #1 pick in the NFL Draft. Brother Michael was considered the obvious choice as the #1 pick, but the Chargers had trouble coming to terms with Vick and his agent. San Diego promptly traded the #1 pick to Atlanta in exchange for the fifth overall pick in the first round, their third-round pick, their second-round pick in 2002 and wide receiver Tim Dwight.

The Chargers used that fifth pick in the ’01 draft to select RB LaDainian Tomlinson, and frankly anything else they got after him was gravy.

And so on this day in 2007 we once again watch as a talented athlete flushes a potentially brilliant career down the crapper.

What a shame.
