A JaMarcus Russell Update & Other Raiders News

Filed under: NFL — Bill @ 9:33 am

Raiders officials met with the agents for JaMarcus Russell in L.A. on Monday in an effort to begin working out a deal. While it is certainly a step in the right direction I wouldn’t expect an agreement to be reached anytime soon.

The Raiders aren’t in any hurry because they have three QB’s in camp that are all capable of starting in the NFL. However they would like to see Russell on the sidelines soon so that he can begin his learning process. In recent years the Raiders have always had their top picks signed before the start of summer camp.

“That’s really the first time (in several weeks) they’ve been together in person, with everybody together at a meeting, so I would assume that would be positive,” said Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin.

Russell’s agents Eric Metz & Ethan Lock made no comments about the L.A. meeting (consistent with their longstanding policy of not commenting on negotiations).

– Culpepper To Start: In keeping with his three QB rotation coach Kiffin announced that Daunte Culpepper will start, Josh McCown will play early in the 3rd quarter, & Andrew Walter will come in last. All three QB’s will have each started a game, relieved the starter, & finished up a game. Kiffin hinted that he may choose the starting QB after reviewing all three game films. My money is on Culpepper.

– Trade Details: Earlier this week the Raiders made a rare trade with the Denver Broncos in which they acquired 29 yr. old DT Gerard Warren for a “conditional draft pick.” Word leaked out that the “condition” is that if Warren makes the final roster the Raiders will give Denver a fifth round draft pick. Warren will be added to a group that includes Warren Sapp, Tommy Kelly, & Terdell Sands.

– Because of his upcoming four game suspension RB Dominic Rhodes saw his practice time begin to dwindle. Despite starting both preseason games Rhodes will now have to take a back seat to LaMont Jordan, Justin Fargas, & Adimchinobe Echemandu. Rhodes is eligible to return in week five vs. the

– More DB’s: Free agent safety Donovin Darius & CB Stanford Routt returned to practice this week and both are expected to play Friday night vs. the St. Louis Rams.
