JaMarcus Russell Closer To Deal With Raiders

Filed under: NFL — Bill @ 12:52 pm

Perhaps it was all done intentionally to avoid the temptation of starting him too soon. Perhaps it was greed, or simply a case of poor management. In any case it appears that the Oakland Raiders and their top pick QB JaMarcus Russell are very close to reaching an agreement.

Jay Glazer of Fox Sports has reported that “the two sides hoped to have an agreement done by Labor Day, but Russell’s ongoing holdout now threatens to go into the start of the season.”

Another source painted a rosier picture. In a USA Today report, Ray Russell, JaMarcus’ uncle and adviser, said the Raiders “realize they have dropped the ball, and they started negotiating in good faith. They’ve done more talking in the last week and a half than the previous three months. It’s almost done.”

He added, “It’s just a damn shame it’s taken this long.”

He’s right. By missing the entire training camp and all the preseason games Russell’s chances of contributing at all this season is virtually impossible. Instead he will earn his $31 million by carrying a clipboard and watching from the sidelines.

Once again the Raiders demonstrated why they have the worst record in the NFL over the past 3 years. Last Saturday they cut a player they had just selected with the 65th overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. Quentin Moses, a highly regarded defensive end from Georgia, who had 25 sacks during a collegiate career, was quickly picked up by the Arizona Cardinals. Perhaps the Raiders could have traded him? Maybe get something in return? Instead the Raiders get nothing from the first pick in the 3rd round.

Now you begin to understand how they went from one of the great franchises to a laughing stock. One thing is certain, they are bound to improve.

At last the NFL is back. Tonight the Indy Colts will begin their quest to repeat as Super Bowl champions when they take on the upstart New Orleans Saints. Keep your eye on RB Reggie Bush, he is something special.

Your favorite blog writer will be in attendance at the Raiders-Lions game on Sunday. Look for me on TV, I will be the one wearing silver & black!
