San Francisco 49ers Hire Mike Martz

Filed under: NFL — Bill @ 6:42 pm

This just in from John Clayton at ESPN:

“Despite some initial resistance from ownership, San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Nolan has hired Mike Martz as his offensive coordinator.

Martz, offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions for the past two years, agreed to a two-year deal with the 49ers. The reason for a two-year contract is that it coincides with the remaining length of Nolan’s deal in San Francisco. The two coaches worked together when they were with the Washington Redskins.”

The Mad Scientist is coming to San Francisco!
If history teaches us anything don’t draft Frank Gore on your ’08 fantasy league team.

Responding to speculation as to who’s decision it was to hire Martz head coach Mike Nolan said, “Hiring the coaching staff is my decision.” There has been rumors about the power shift in the 49ers front office. Recently owner (in theory) John York promoted Scott McClouhan to the role of GM, thus diminishing Nolan’s power. Also in the mix is Jed York, John’s son, who is being groomed as the eventual owner.

One factor nobody ever discusses in regards to Nolan’s disastrous season is that his father (former 49er head coach during the 70’s) Dick Nolan died during the season after suffering a long illness. Despite what anyone says this had to take it’s toll on Mike.

Regarding the so-called problems between Nolan & QB Alex Smith, Nolan described it as “a miscommunication.” Hiring Martz will go a long way to healing this relationship regardless of it’s origin.

Despite the fact that Nolan has two years left on his deal, don’t kid yourself. If the 49ers don’t show rapid improvement he won’t be back for the 2009 season.
