Breaking NFL News: Panthers, 49ers, Raiders, Seahawks, Redskins, Chargers in the News

The hits just keep on coming…

Breaking News:

Panthers Ink Williams & Johnson
The Carolina Panthers opened up their safe and signed two of their top free agents in the last 24 hours. The most recent being highly regarded RB DeAngelo Williams who was hurt for a portion of last season but gained over 1500 yds. in ’08 & over 1100 yds. in ’09.

Yesterday they by most accounts “over-paid” for their pass rushing specialist Charles Johnson. In his first year as a starter Johnson recorded 11/5 sacks, so he was rewarded with a $72 million deal over six years.

49ers RB Gore Wants New Contract
After suffering a nasty injury last year Frank Gore has informed the 49ers that if they want the All-Pro RB back in uniform then they will have to “show him the money”. Besides LB Patrick Willis, Gore has been the Niners best player on the team.

Raiders Sign Condo
Perhaps one of the most underrated positions on a football field in that of the long-snapper. The Raiders signed their free agent long-snapper Jon Condo which means he will continue to snap for Sebastian Janikowski & Shane Lechler. This isn’t a headline type move but a very important one.

Seattle Signs Gallery
Former Raiders 1st round draft pick G Robert Gallery will be reunited with his former coach Tom Cable in Seattle. The Raiders had no interest in Gallery having seen him play.

Redskins Trade With Broncos
After signing WR Santana Moss yesterday the Redskins went out and picked up another one today, acquiring WR Jabar Gaffney. In return Denver will receive defensive end Jeremy Jarmon.

Chargers Sign Weddle
The Bolts avoided losing their top free agent by signing safety Eric Weddle today. Yesterday they signed Takeo Spikes, who was a very valuable & underrated performer last season with San Francisco.

QB Carousel
With all the recent QB movement things are starting to take shape and only a few NFL QB jobs remain. Here is the skinny:

Teams who have settled their QB situation:
Minnesota: Donovan McNabb & Christian Ponder
San Francisco: Alex Smith & Colin Kaepernick
Seattle: Charlie Whitehurst, Tarvaris Jackson, & Matt Leinart
Tennessee: Matt Hasselbeck & Jake Locker

QB Situation Still Unsettled:
Arizona: With the departure of Matt Leinart the only remaining QB’s left from last season is Richard Bartel, who hasn’t ever started an NFL game or thrown a single TD pass. If you listen to ESPN they would lead you to believe that the proposed trade for Eagles QB Kevin Kolb is a done deal. While that certainly could happen I would question paying such a high price for an inexperienced QB. Philly is said to want a 1st & a 3rd round pick for the rights to Kolb, plus Kolb wants a huge multi-year contract. Another possibility, one I think makes more sense would be for the Cardinals to pay much less for Denver QB Kyle Orton. This is the Cardinals so we really just have to wait and see.

Cincinnati: Obviously no more Carson Palmer so that only leaves 1st round draft pick Andy Dalton. The Bengals are currently talking to former Raider QB Bruce Gradkowski.

Denver: Obviously Tim Tebow will start but will they trade Kyle Orton? Yes most likely. Possible teams interested in Orton include Miami or Arizona.

Miami: They want, and need, somebody to compete with Chad Henne. The Dolphins did just signed undrafted but highly regarded QB Pat Devlin from Delaware. Rumors abound that they also have shown interest in Kyle Orton.

Thoughts from the top of my head:
Look for the temporarily retired Tiki Barber to end up in Pittsburgh. No rumors or inside information here, I just know that Tiki has a longstanding friendship with Steeler coach Mike Tomlin.

Reggie Bush will either have to take a salary cut or be cut from the Saints. Personally I think he would be wise to stay in New Orleans but if he doesn’t where would he go? Imagine him with Indianapolis or Philadelphia. Since Pete Carrol seems to be trying to recreate his 2005 USC Trojans maybe Bush could end up in Seattle.

Need a couple old wide receivers with attitude?
Randy Moss & Terrell Owens are both available. I’m thinking 2 for 1 sale. Actually T.O. mysteriously hurt his knee this offseason but his agent claims he will be ready by late preseason. I wouldn’t touch either of them with somebody else’s pole.
