Raiders: Updated Injury News & Game Notes

Filed under: NFL, Oakland Raiders — Bill @ 1:28 pm

Nothing new on the injury to Hiram Eugene, the only thing I’ve seen so far is that the SF Chronicle said “Eugene could miss a significant amount of time” due to his dislocated hip which occurred last night on the 2nd half kickoff. No replays were shown so it was impossible to determine exactly what happened on the play.

Mr. Brittle Injured Again…
Oakland Raiders WR Chaz Schilens suffered a knee injury in the second quarter of the team’s preseason opener while running a reverse. Head coach Hue Jackson said Schilens appeared to be walking fine in the locker room after the game. He will be further examined by team doctors Friday.

More On The Kickoff Mistake
Hue Jackson said in the postgame press conference that “the captain” (meaning Jason Campbell was asked by the official what the Raiders wanted to do. He responded, “We want to kick” then a few seconds later said, “we want to defer”. The head official told Jackson later “we should have asked your captain to clarify what he meant.” Sounds like the referee was being a bit picky, but Campbell should have been more clear.

Things To Work On
OT Khalif Barnes had 3 penalties called on him, CB Walter McFadden had two on him, & veteran Sam Williams had a critical personal foul called on him that led to an Arizona score.

The Raiders young DB’s (Stevie Brown, Jeremy Boyd, Jeremy Ware, Van Dyke, & McFadden) gave up the bulk of the Cardinals passing yards.

The Good News
Michael Huff, who really came on at the end of last season, appears bigger & stronger and was a defensive force early in the game.

Rookie Stefen Wisniewski came in during the 2nd quarter and played well. His name was hardly mentioned which is always good if you are an offensive lineman. The Raiders other rookie lineman Joseph Barksdale also played a significant amount of time.

WR Darrius Heyward-Bey also looks stronger & thicker. This will be his make or break season.

Speaking of WR’s, Johnnie Lee Higgins is now playing for the Philadelphia Eagles. As a fan of his I hope he makes the teams but the odds are against him.

The Raiders three QB’s combined for numbers were 23-36 238 yds. 1 TD 0 Int’s Kyle Boller started his first drive going 6 for 6.

The defense, both 1st & 2nd team units played very well. One goal line stand, and held the Cardinals scoreless until late in the 2nd quarter.
