Holy Toledo. He’s Back With More Vintage Sports Videos on DVD!

Hello Friends
Happy Opening Day to the 2018 baseball season!

Yes I am aware that it has been four months since I last posted here in Holy Toledo. To say that life has been hectic would be an understatement. While I missed it, you will see that I have not been resting on my a**, I mean laurels. BIG news is on the horizon, look for a major announcement in the coming days.

Meanwhile here is “What’s New” in vintage sports video. You will find these catagories bekiw: NFL, NFL Game of the Weej shows, College Football, Basketball, and Drag Racing.

Highlights include:

-A new Bill King video, he narrates a nice copy of the 1974-75 Golden State Warriors Highlight Film
-While on the subject of hoops, I found a cool recording of a record breaking performance. “The Sleepy Floyd Game” as called by Greg Papa. Sleepy scores 29 points in the 4th quarter!
1987 Western Conference Gm.4 LA Lakers at Golden St.

-A game coached by Otto Graham, my first I believe
The ‘69 College All-Stars vs. the world champion NY Jets.

-Did you know that the “perfect” 1972 Dolphins almost lost a game?
Yes Joe Willie Namath’s NY Jets put a scare in Shula’s team, they had to overcome two 2nd Half Jet leads. Watch it in a well done merge of game film and radio broadcast.
(NFL Game Of The Week show also acquired of this game)

-Can you win a game when your QB throws five interceptions?
See the 1980 Chiefs at Seahawks, it’s quite odd

Famous 1st and Lasts:
-Brett Favre’s 1st NFL game, one he wishes he could forget (1991).
-Bill Parcells’ first game as a head coach (1983).
-Eric Dickerson’s 1st and last game as a LA Ram (1983 and 1987)
-New Orleans Saints clinch their 1st winning season in franchise history, in of all places Pittsburgh
-Raymond Berry’s 1st game as head coach for the Patriots
-1st game for the “Phoenix” Cardinals (1988).

Great Individual Performances:
-Mark Rypien incredible 7 touchdown game, and wait until you see his stats (1991).
-Moon vs. Kosar in a virtual playoff game to decide the ‘89 AFC Central champion on the final week of the season. Naturally it’s a thriller.
-The famous Montana to Rice for 78 yards in the waning second the beat Big Blue

-A game with historic and scary proportions, and a game that was hard to find. The “Tom Landry Death Threat game”. Yes while in LA coach Landry had to be escorted from the field by security. He later returned, but this had never happened before (1986).

“The Dog Pound”
If you like “Marty’s Browns” you will enjoy several new games from the Kosar era

-Raider fans will be happy with 3 nice upgrades, including a beautiful copy of an epic thriller at the Dog Pound.
-Upgrades of the 1987 AFC Championship and a Super Bowl XX, both from high quality original masters.

College Football:
-Dick Butkus & Carl Eller in Rose Bowls
-A cool Jim Plunkett 1970 Stanford game
-Chick Hearn calling a Rose Bowl game
-O.J. Simpson vs. Joe Theisman from 1968 (USC vs. Notre Dame).

-NHRA: the full 2017 season including Sportsman and Pro Mod.

Take your time, look through this list, and take a walk down memory lane.

Feel free to contact me should you have any questions or special requests.

Best wishes,
from Holy Toledo!

Holiday Specials & Holiday Wishes from Holy Toledo Vintage Sports Videos on DVD

Happy Holidays from Holy Toledo!

Let’s get right to it. No I did not lose my home to the wildfires of northern California, however it was close. We were evacuated three times, and I packed sever important bins of my vintage sports collection. However I had to leave behind most of the bins, which was a tough thing to do. The fire came very close to our home, we were fortunate because the firefighters did such an incredible job. Many of our friends and family were not as fortunate.

As we all gather this holiday season we are truly thankful. We have a whole new appreciation for the first responders, and we are grateful that the lives of our friends and family were spared.

Once again it is that jingle bell time of year. Pour the egg nog, put up Christmas lights, and watch your favorite vintage sports videos. This year I could watch the 2017 Auto Club NHRA Finals over and over again. Way to go Brittany and Robert! I’ve also added “the longest game” to this years rotation, I want to revisit the epic ‘71 Christmas triple overtime playoff game between Miami and Kansas City. I also want to watch a good game announced by Don Criqui, an underrated announcer.

— Gift Giving —
Rather than giving a gift that will sit on a shelf gathering dust, or will remain neatly folded in the “clothes I never wear” drawer, give the gift that keeps on giving… Vintage Sports Videos!

Or you could do what many of us do, by yourself the present you really want, because you know nobody is going to buy for you.

Everybody loves to watch their favorite team or player win that legendary game. In our house we like to watch Big Daddy and The Snake. As most of you are aware I collect vintage sports and probably have every major or historic moment in NFL, College Football, NASCAR, NHRA, and IndyCar. If you want to see my complete list just click on the links to your right, or email me.

Bill King gets Cooperstown coronation: ‘This is a Holy Toledo moment’

Bill King, the greatest announcer in my lifetime, is finally being honored this weekend by the Baseball Hall of Fame. Most of us grew up listening to Bill, he was the voice of our youth.

He described most of the greatest sports moments of my life. I met him once, a moment I will never forget (a story for another day). His unique style and unabashed tirades were what made him legendary.

He could paint you a verbal picture that was forever etched in your mind.

I just wish he was here to enjoy this special moment.

Holy Cooperstown!

During a sun-splashed afternoon on baseball’s sacred ground, Bay Area broadcasting favorite Bill King finally got his due.

“I think this is a Holy Toledo moment,” his stepdaughter, Kathleen Lowenthal said Saturday, using her stepfather’s signature call in accepting the Baseball Hall of Fame’s top broadcasting honor. “It is for me.”

King spent 25 years captivating A’s fans with rousing calls that ranged from Rickey Henderson’s stolen base records through the “Moneyball” 20-game winning streak. King died in 2005, but colleagues such as longtime radio partner Ken Korach campaigned relentlessly for him to be honored with the Ford C. Frick Award.

The work paid off Saturday at Doubleday Field. With Korach smiling in the crowd and seated next to Hank Greenwald, who teamed with King on Warriors broadcasts, Lowenthal saluted the sustained effort it took to end the wait.

“Bill never sought out awards of any kind but he was only human and he certainly enjoyed the accolades,” Lowenthal said her speech. (The quotes in this story came from the live stream of the ceremony still available at the Hall of Fame’s Facebook page.)

“But never in a million years did he believe he would be in the Baseball Hall of Fame. When people would bring it up, he would brush it aside. Fans and friends and colleagues brought it up all the time — even I did. Bill loved broadcasting. He just really loved talking to you.”

King became a fixture in Bay Area sports starting in the late 1950s, when he was hired by KSFO as a fill-in broadcaster on Giants games — subbing for Lon Simmons and Russ Hodges, his fellow future Frick winners.

The Warriors hired him in 1962 and the King added Raiders play-by-play to his duties in 1966. From then on, it was as if his erudite phrasing and emotional crescendos were always floating somewhere through the Bay Area air.

Joe Morgan, the baseball Hall of Famer who grew up in Oakland, said as much Saturday before presenting the Frick Award to Lowenthal.

“Bill King, in my mind was truly a man for all seasons,” Morgan said. “Because he taught me how to listen to Warriors basketball, A’s baseball and the Oakland Raiders. This is a great honor for me.”

Lowenthal, whose mother, Nancy Stephens, was with King for 44 years, noted that King’s varied sports talents represented only a fraction of his staggering breadth of knowledge.

She said King loved sailing, ballet, opera, jazz and fine arts. He grew so interested in Russian history that he learned the language, too.

“All of his varied interests, his encyclopedic knowledge of baseball and his voluminous vocabulary made him the broadcaster he was,” Lowenthal said.

MLB Network broadcaster Matt Vasgersian, who grew up in Moraga, narrated a video introducing King’s career to the audience, calling him “one of the most influential figures in the history of sports broadcasting. … It was fitting for a man who enjoyed opera and ballet to have his own voice referred to as ‘poetry on the radio.’”

Vasgersian noted that there are many who think King did his best work on football … and even more who think he was best at basketball.

But baseball is the first sports Hall of Fame to honor King — which would have been fine by him, Lowenthal said. She said baseball was his “first love.”

She also recalled what it was like going to A’s games in person being surprised to see so many fans with ear buds connected to their transistor radios.

“Fans could not get enough of Bill,” Lowenthal said. “Even though they were at the game, they still wanted to hear what Bill had to say about what they were seeing.

“Bill had a really special relationship with his audience. He told me one time that he would have one person in mind when he was broadcasting. And I think that’s why his broadcasts came across so personal — as if he was talking to you.”

King, visited the Baseball Hall of Fame just once, in 2004, when A’s closer Dennis Eckersley and Bill’s former A’s broadcast partner Lon Simmons were both honored. Lowenthal said he remained “exhilarated” by that visit until the day he died.

Now, King will be part of the place forever.

“And I really wish he could walk out of that Iowa cornfield right now,” Lowenthal said, “and see for himself the tremendous respect and fondness his fans and colleagues still hold for him today.”

Here is What’s New at Holy Toledo! Your Source for Vintage Sports Video

With training camp just a few days away the tine has come to finish up your summer projects and begin to prepare for the 2017 season. In my case I am clearing off my desk, going through the stacks of vintage sports videos that have accumulated over the summer. Typically most of my items listed here are actual football game broadcasts, however you see this list has a variety of different types of sports videos.

Here are some highlights:
Raiders Fans take note. I finally found two missing Raiders Yearbooks!
With the addition of the 1981 Oakland and 1988 LA Raiders yearbooks, this means I now have ever Raider yearbook from 1964 to 1983. The only yearbooks still missing are the 1984, 1986, and 1989, otherwise I have them all up to the current 2016 season.

**If anyone has these three missing yearbooks I will gladly offer you a substantial trade reward for a copy.

Check out the Game Of The Week List featuring the 1965 game Gale Sayers scored 6 TDs, and the very first regular season overtime game from 1974.

Be sure to check out all the various documentaries included in this list. There is some fantastic shows included here.

Just want actual game broadcasts?
Eric Dickerson or LA Rams fans will enjoy a couple games I picked up, games where Dickerson rushes for over 200 yards!

Buffalo Bills fans will like seeing a few interesting games I picked up featuring the great Thurman Thomas. There is also a tremendous copy of a great ’91 QB duel between Jim Kelly and Marino

If you like Jim Kelly you may want to look thru the new games I picked up featuring his early years with the Houston Gamblers. I’ve actually acquired quite a few new USFL games, all listed below.

Now you can see this wild 34-33 game! The famous 1985 USFL game between Jim Kelly’s Houston Gamblers and Steve Young’s LA Express. Kelly’s 574 yards passing is the most ever in American pro football history.

Last week was the 40th anniversary of one of the worst promotions ever. Bill Veeck’s Chicago White Sox thought it would be a great idea to have “Disco Demolition Night.”

During the break between games of a doubleheader a local rock DJ was going to blow up a bunch of disco albums. Fans were encouraged to bring their disco records to the game. The number of kids who showed up, and the events that unfolded that night were completely unexpected.

I have a copy of the entire game 1, plus the mayhem that occurs just prior to game 2. Also included is local news reports and a look back after all these years.

Baseball fans also will notice that I found my original recording of the 2004 ALCS Game 7 Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees. I’ve made a 5 disks copy of this very nice quality recording, it includes extended postgame.

Basketball Fan?
Golden State Warriors Fan?
Cleveland Cavaliers fan?
I have ever game, every minute of The Trilogy, the last three NBA Finals.
I also have every postseason game of the Golden State Warriors during the past three epic seasons.

Holy Toledo do I have exciting news to share with you. Unfortunately I can’t reveal this huge news just yet, but when I do there will only be two words escaping from your mouth, “Holy Toledo!”
The BIG NEWS will be revealed next week.

Enjoy the list and keep watching us at Holy Toledo!
I have many new games on the way…

from Holy Toledo!

What’s New In Vintage Sports Video for 2016!

While everyone was off celebrating for the holidays and drinking champagne to toast the new year Holy Toledo was busy finding new gems in the wonderful wacky wild world of vintage sports video.

With so many new items to describe, it is difficult to determine what to highlight first. I suppose it would be best to begin with games that were never knew existed before. Take for example the really cool version of the 1980 week 12 matchup between the two teams that would eventually meet in the Super Bowl Oakland at Philadelphia. This is a really nice copy and an excellent game. Raider fans have been searching for this one for many years.

Raiders fans also might take note of the two new nice quality upgrades from 1982, 1983, 2000, and 2004.

There are a few new Monday Night & Thursday Night football games from the Howard Cosell era that have been discovered.

If you are a fan of Billy Sims or the Lions, take note that I have found copies of his first few NFL games, and he came into the league with a big splash!

Speaking of 1980, you will see that I added more games of a couple really fun teams to watch, the “Cardiac Kids” of Cleveland led by Brian Sipe, and Bartkowski’s high flying Falcons.

If you love overtime thrillers take note of the two great games from week 8 and 9, 2001. These were the two weeks in a row that the bears won back-to-back overtime games because of a linebacker named Mike Brown. As good as the 49ers at Bears game is, the Browns at Bears game the following week is even better. And wait until you see the quality of that Browns-Bears game, it is spectacular.

Speaking o beautiful quality… I picked up a really nice copy of the Cleveland Browns final game at the old Municipal Stadium (1995) before they moved to Baltimore. This copy also includes local pre and postgame coverage. A must have for any true Browns fan.

Do you remember a guy they called “The Nigerian Nightmare”? His name is Christian Okoye, and during his prime he was about as dominating and scary a running back to ever play the game. I picked up some of his best games from 1989 and 1990.

There are just too many goodies to mention them all so simply scour the list below to see what is new from Holy Toledo! In addition to the NFL games you will find some rare college football, a few whopper of baseball games, along with basketball and racing. As always feel free to email me with any questions.

from Holy Toledo!

If You Love Vintage Sports You Will Want To See What’s New From Holy Toledo!

As we enter the 11th month on 2015 it is time to begin preparing for the holiday season, clean your gutters, find your favorite turkey recipe, and stock up on vintage sports videos! Well hey, that’s what I do.

You know me, I’m always adding to the massive sports video collection. My newest batch of games contain some remarkable items, including one thing I thought I would never own. A game with the legendary coach Vince Lombardi!

I’ve discovered a huge lot of games from the great West Coast rivalry of the LA Rams versus the San Francisco 49ers. As the old saying goes “these two teams just do not like each other”, and it shows in these great games.

If you like defense hide your eyes, I have many games with almost 1000 yards of offense, including several of the highest scoring games ever.

Need some miracle finishes for the holidays? One need look no further, there are many fantastic finishes &on this list. Craving a comeback? How about Elway’s 1st ever 4th quarter comeback? That’s here.

Want to show your grandkids why Staubach, Montana & Fouts were so good? Have they ever seen an actual game with Earl Campbell, Walter Payton, or this guy who used to wear funny looking goggles named Dickerson? Maybe you simply prefer the 1970’s style of hard nosed football? Teach them the story about the Cardiac Kids by showing them a game. Want to see a young college freshman named Hershel or Bo? Or maybe you would like to see the last game played at Shea Stadium or the first one at Three Rivers? It’s here. In fact if one were to look thru my entire “2015 UPDATED FOOTBALL LIST” (which I can send you via email), you would find just about every major moment in football history live as it occurred.

You Won’t Believe You Ears, Look What’s New In Vintage Sports Radio!

Q: When is the best time to listen to a great old radio broadcast of one of your favorite games?
A: When you’re cruisin’ in your car of course!

Close you eyes and imagine if you will.
You get in your car on a nice afternoon, roll down the windows, pop in a cd, put the car in gear and go. Exactly where you are going is not important, in fact it shouldn’t be planned. “Let’s go where the road takes us” is what you say to your friend in the passenger seat (hopefully a pretty girl).

As the temperature in your engine begins to warm, out of the speakers comes a familiar voice. Maybe it’s Curt Gowdy or Jim Simpson. You see, the cd you popped in was actually one of those vintage sports cd’s you picked up from Holy Toledo! As you and your friend tour the back roads, you are also hearing Bill King paint a verbal picture in your mind of another great Raiders-Steelers battle. Perhaps you prefer to listen Al DeRogatis describe the action as Joe Willie Namath takes his Jets to the Super Bowl. Personally I enjoy the subtle rhythms of a baseball game while driving.

Somewhere around halftime, or the 5th inning, you start to smell the ocean in the air. The wind that is blowing into the car windows has begun to cool and you realize you are almost to the beach. A twinge of hunger echoes in your belly and you know the time has come to find a place to get lunch. Your friend spots a small deli near the wharf. Just as Monte Stickles is reminding you to come back to hear the halftime stats, you pull your car into the gravel parking lot and shut off the engine.

Seagulls fly overhead, the pungent odor of crab is in the air, and out the front door of the deli walks a family, laughing with hands full of food. As you walk in you see that it’s a tiny little place jam packed with food and souvenirs. After the little old lady in an apron hands you your bag of food, your friend discovers a table out back on the wharf. It’s there that you enjoy your lunch and watch as several men unload salmon from a large fishing boat. A short time later, feeling full, content, and warm from the sun on your back, your friend hands you a piece of salt water taffy and says, “I think halftime is about over, time to hit the road.”

Now traveling along the coast on those curvy roads that allow you to see the ocean around every other bend, Bill King describes another damn Steelers touchdown. The scenery is beautiful, a gorgeous day for a car rise. By the end of the 3rd quarter you turn your car inland, in the direction that lead you back home. Things aren’t looking good for the hometown team. Then an interesting thing happens, as the air begins to warm, getting further from the coast, so to does the Raiders offense. Stabler to Siani for six. As you and your friend pass thru the rolling hills Roy Gerela kicks a field goal, and with 4 minutes left, it’s the Steelers by 10.

“We need to stop, I have to pee. Plus I want to change the momentum of the game,” your friend says. “I know this little old Italian place just up the road, they make the best homemade ravioli, and they have a bathroom We can pick up some dinner for later,” she adds. And so you do.

Now back in the car, loaded with fresh ravioli, two jars of “Nono’s Special Sauce”, garlic bread, and a bottle of chianti, you set your path towards home. You turn the game back on. Knowing the Raiders need to score, and quickly. Stabler to Branch on the sidelines, Stabler to Biletnikoff over the middle, then Kenny hits Casper down the middle for a touchdown. Two and a half minutes to go, down by 3, and Bill King reminds you to “hang on to your hats!”

Getting close to home now, your car probably could drive the rest of the way without your assistance. Bradshaw hands off to Bleier, Raiders call time. Bradshaw hands off to Franco, now it’s the 2 minute warning and 3rd down.

Bill King then describes the next play, “Split backs behind Bradshaw. The crowd chants ‘defense’, Hendricks shows blitz. Bradshaw back to pass, rolls right to avoid the rush, he throws… INTERCEPTED by Willie Hall! Holy Toledo the Raiders have one last shot!”

As you pull into the driveway the Raiders offense takes the field. You turn off the engine but keep the cd playing. Your friend, demonstrating exactly why you like her so much, doesn’t get out of the car. She too wants to hear the end of the game.

With just seconds to go Casper makes a finger tip catch to score the winning touchdown, just as you knew he would. You’ve listened to this game so many times you practically have Bill King’s call memorized. You see it’s not about the finish, it’s about the journey. Today you took your friend on an afternoon cruise, enjoyed the countryside, the ocean, and a nice lunch. All the while you heard another old friend describe one of your favorite plays. Just as people enjoy viewing an old movie they love over and over, why not do the same with one of your favorite games?

Well I do, and I recommend playing one while you take a pretty friend for a car ride.
As promised I have exciting news for all of us who circulate & percolate in the world of vintage sports recordings. Now before you get too excited, please have a paper bag handy to overcome any thoughts of hyperventilating. OK did you get that done? All righty then…. Here is the big news….

Some of you might recall the game referred to as “The Immaculate Reception”, and as we all know there is no copy of the actual NBC broadcast from that fateful day. What has been found however is a nice quality recording of the national radio broadcast featuring announcers Van Patrick & Bob Reynolds. When I listened to the game that part that got my attention was the long delay between the time Franco Harris crossed the goal line, and the time the officials finally signaled touchdown. One wonders if they truly were checking on the number of security guards. No mater, this recording is a nice discovery and a great piece of sports history.

Some of you Bay Area fans might recall that after the Oakland Raiders & Golden St. Warriors championship seasons in the mid 1970’s each team put out a high quality studio produced audio season highlight recording on an LP (for you youngster you might need to look up the word “album”). A good friend of mine actually owned one of these but we had no way to copy it to a cd. Well through the assistance of my friend Stuart we now have both recordings, and the quality is excellent. The great Bill King is featured prominently in both, and the memories are priceless. The Raiders album was called “Crowning Glory”, and the Warriors was titled “The Year of Excitement”.

I have a total of 5 new Bill King recordings, 2 Warriors games from the 1977-78 season, an A’s game from their championship season of 1989, and the 2 LP’s.

In addition there are two new national radio broadcasts from some exciting NFL playoff games from the 1970’s.

Perhaps the most surprising find as of late was the discovery of some extremely rare and historic baseball games that go back over 80 years! You are going to be amazed, here are just a few, see the entire list below:
– The oldest known recording of a regular season baseball game
– 1934 All-Star Game
– The Shot Heard Round the World
– Mantle & Maris in their record breaking 1961 season
– The New York Mets first game ever
– The incredible Giants-Dodgers pennant deciding playoff game
– The 1970 All-Star game with the Rose-Fosse Collision

It is a labor of love, but we do work hard at this rewarding hobby.

from Holy Toledo!
