It’s National Vintage Sports Video Day!

If ever there was a day meant for watching vintage football games on dvd, today is that day. The week between the Conference championships and the Super Bowl is for most of us a dead week. Nobody I know over the age of 10 gets excited about the Pro Bowl. There is no racing, no baseball, just tall college boys in shorts, and frankly that just doesn’t do it for me. So where do we turn? Do what I do, pick out a favorite game from your vintage sports library and watch the legends play in legendary games.

On behalf of all of us collectors, seize this day, and do hereby declare today National Vintage Sports Video Day!

So if you are in Miami get your ass off the beach and watch Czonka or Marino, those in KC pull our your copy of Super Bowl IV, Raider fans put on Super Bowl XVIII or the Holy Roller. if you are a Cubs fan watch game 7. Steelers fans pick out anything from the 1970’s, Cowboys fans might wish to watch the 1992 NFC Championship, or since it is somewhat of a religious holiday, the Hail Mary game may be appropriate.

Personally I’m watching the great Monday Night Football game from 1978 at the Astrodome. You remember it, Earl Campbell & Howard Cosell vs. the mighty Dolphins of Miami. Luv ya Blue!

My father, who could care less about old football games is watching the 1984 NHRA U.S. Nationals on dvd. He, while sitting by a warm fire is watching Big Daddy Don Garlits face off with a young brash kid from Florida named Darrell Gwynn. He’s going to see some funny cars driven by Dunn, McCuloch, and Bernstein. That is the beauty of this holiday, the menu is wide open for you to choose.

Today we claim as our own.
From this day forth, and every year after, I declare that the Sunday before the Super Bowl will always be our official holiday. This day will forever be known as…
“National Vintage Sports Video Day”.

Go forth and watch Ray Scott or Curt Gowdy, soak up Howard and Danderoo, relive the greet Bill King. Just take a few minutes of this special day and claim it as your own.

Holy Toledo!

Vintage Daytona, Indy & Drag Boats on DVD!

I am happy to report that I have finally been able to pick p some new vintage racing action. With one very notable exception, most of the new acquisitions are Nascar & Drag Boat Racing. However if you are a fan of the Indianapolis 500 I have big news for you.

Long before the days of live race coverage on your television the Indy 500 could only be seen by attending what was called a “closed-circuit broadcast”. Racing fans would gather at a local theater, pay for a ticket, and watch the race on a large movie screen. Some of you silver haired fans will remember this. Well from far across the pond I found a beautiful 3 disk copy of the 1966 Indianapolis 500! The broadcast has no announcers, it does however have all the sounds from the track. An exciting race featuring Jim Clack, Graham Hill, and rookie Jackie Stewart. The pole sitter was Mario Andretti, and of course there are several racers named Unser. The quality for a 1966 recording is surprisingly good, however there is no audio for the first 17 minutes of the recording. This recording appears to be a copy of the raw satellite feed sent to Europe, it is very cool and quite the find!

Meanwhile I’ve also found some rare old Nascar races from the 1970’s to the 1990’s. Of particular interest to some of you will be the recordings from the old Riverside, as well as some hard to find Daytona 500 races that were missing from my collection.

Attention Drag Boat Fans! If you love the liquid quarter mile take note. I have listed all of my IHRA and Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing collection. There are some really cool recordings here, featuring drag boats before the days of the enclosed cockpit. I wish I had more, so if you have any, or know anyone who wants to trade, please contact me. I also have some of my own home movies featuring drag boats racing at Oakland, Oroville, and Perris California.

I am also looking for some NHRA Drag Racing videos from the 1980’s and 1990’s needed to fill in my collection, so please let me know if you would like to trade.

Check out what is new in vintage racing videos.

If You Love Vintage Sports You Will Want To See What’s New From Holy Toledo!

As we enter the 11th month on 2015 it is time to begin preparing for the holiday season, clean your gutters, find your favorite turkey recipe, and stock up on vintage sports videos! Well hey, that’s what I do.

You know me, I’m always adding to the massive sports video collection. My newest batch of games contain some remarkable items, including one thing I thought I would never own. A game with the legendary coach Vince Lombardi!

I’ve discovered a huge lot of games from the great West Coast rivalry of the LA Rams versus the San Francisco 49ers. As the old saying goes “these two teams just do not like each other”, and it shows in these great games.

If you like defense hide your eyes, I have many games with almost 1000 yards of offense, including several of the highest scoring games ever.

Need some miracle finishes for the holidays? One need look no further, there are many fantastic finishes &on this list. Craving a comeback? How about Elway’s 1st ever 4th quarter comeback? That’s here.

Want to show your grandkids why Staubach, Montana & Fouts were so good? Have they ever seen an actual game with Earl Campbell, Walter Payton, or this guy who used to wear funny looking goggles named Dickerson? Maybe you simply prefer the 1970’s style of hard nosed football? Teach them the story about the Cardiac Kids by showing them a game. Want to see a young college freshman named Hershel or Bo? Or maybe you would like to see the last game played at Shea Stadium or the first one at Three Rivers? It’s here. In fact if one were to look thru my entire “2015 UPDATED FOOTBALL LIST” (which I can send you via email), you would find just about every major moment in football history live as it occurred.

TWO HOLIDAY SPECIALS!

“The MJ Six Pack”
Now you can have all 6 of Michael Jordan’s championship winning games on dvd. They could be yours, or you could gift them to a friend. I think almost every sports fan would enjoy an “MJ Six Pack” under their tree. $42

Why I Do What I Do, Vintage Sports Video On DVD

Holy Toledi I have been working my ass off on building a nice collection of the greatest teams, coaches, & players, names like Sanders, Payton, Rice, Faulk, Montana, Stabler, Riggins, Moon, Fouts, Gibbs, Walsh, Madden, Ditka, & Shula, just to name a few.

I’ve built a huge Raiders collection, my 49ers collection is second to few, through friends we are starting to have the foremost Monday Night Football collection of all-time. The problem these days is two-fold; storage and equipment. I’ve destroyed several high quality dvd recorders by simply using them up. Times have been tough lately, but in the words of Vince Lombardi, “I will run to daylight.”

I may have two dvd recorders in the repair shop currently but we will power through……

My love for the Tigers of Auburn has not diminished, the collection of Iron Bowels & Bo Jackson games continue to grow. I still say the 2013 Iron Bowl was the 2nd greatest football game I’ve seen in my lifetime. War Eagle!

For you racing fans don’t forget to check out my extensive drag racing Nascar, & Indy car collection by using the link to your left labelled “Vintage Racing Video Collection on DVD”. Some of my drag racing videos date back to the 1950’s.

In my 50+ years I have been fortunate enough to witness some of the greatest moments in sports. If I am able to preserve some of them for future generations, I will.

Always growing,
Holy Toledo!

How To Get A Funny Car Ready In 53 Minutes

Filed under: Boat Drags, NHRA, Vintage Sports Video — Bill @ 3:31 pm

This weekend the NHRA boys were on live TV, which forced them to deal with an extremely quick turn around time between the semi-final & final round. If you want to win a team needs to plan ahead for such an event. Today I happened upon this little gem of information. If you know anything about cars, this will amaze you.

Between Round Schedule:
1. Tow the car back to the pits = 6 minutes
2. Remove clutch assembly, supercharger, manifold, cylinder heads, & short block assembly (not to mention the body of the funny car) =10 minutes
(Keep in mind these parts are extremely hot, anywhere from 300 to 800 degrees)
3. Install new short block, along with new clutch assembly & cylinder heads = 15 minutes
4. Add the final touches to the top end of the engine, blower, valve adjustments = 12 minutes
5. Warm up engine & clutch, final check, & tow to starting line = 10 minutes
Buckled up & ready to run 300 m.p.h. again in 53 minutes!

Today was the NHRA Route 66 Nationals from Joliet, IL, near Chicago. For some odd reason I am missing several of the past events, so if you have any of them on dvd or vhs contact me. I will trade for anything in my vast collection.

John Madden’s 1st Game As Announcer, Big Score In Vintage Sports Video Land!

(I haven’t forgotten, I’m still working on the Holy Toledo shirt connection, other than going to an Oakland A’s game to buy one)

Big Score!

A non-disgruntled mail lady delivered a really fine package of the most high priority today,, delivering some very vintage NFL games on dvd that made me extremely happy.

We all recognize John Madden as a unique announcer full of colorful phrases and insights only authored by the big man himself. However there was a day when he was a rookie, unsure of his abilities, and a bit awkward to say the least. That day occurred in week 4 of the 1979 season, just a few months after he had retired from coaching the Oakland Raiders. It was the day he became known as the announcer John Madden, as opposed to coach Madden.

September 23rd, 1979 at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, CA
New Orleans Saints vs. San Francisco 49ers
John Madden’s 1st game as an announcer

His agent had to convince him to try it, he was extremely reluctant, refused to fly to games, didn’t tell CBS about his fear of flying, but even in his 1st game Madden showed he had a knack for this thing they call announcing.

The game is joined in progress with two teams that described as mediocre might be a stretch. Yet a young Bill Walsh’s team led by Steve Edberg, O.L. Simpson, & Freddie Solomon face the Saints led by Dick Nolan, Archie Manning, Chuck Muncie, & Tony Galbraith.

1979 Thanksgiving Day
Houston Oilers at Dallas Cowboys
Roger Staubach vs. Earl Campbell

Bum Phillips’s red hot Oilers invade Big D to take on the establishment, America’s Team, Landry’s Cowboys. Dante Pastorini & “Double O” Ken Burrough try to outduel Staubach & Drew Pearson, but both have a fearsome running attack, Tony Dorsett vs. Earl Campbell. The result is an unforgettable holiday classic that end with excitement.

1986 Week 13
“The End Of The Era”
Philadelphia Eagles vs. Los Angeles Raiders
A game that features two great defenses, many stars (Reggie White, Randall Cunningham, Hayes & Haynes, Marcus Allen), a back & forth thriller that ends in heartbreak for the Raiders. Some say that this was the day the Marcus Allen vs. Al Davis feud began. One thing is certain, things were never the same again in L.A. after this game. This is a new upgraded version that far exceeds the previous version.

It’s always nice to get new material in the mail, this is why I love trading games, finding new friends, and seeing what other people have in their video collection.
