Off-Season Acquisitions Of A Vintage Sports Video Collector

(With a heavy heart we carry on the way Bobby T. would have wanted, and also please remember my Uncle Buck in your thoughts and prayers)

Now that the NFL Draft has come and gone, and most of the free agents have been signed, teams are gathering for their “OTA’s” to get their first glimpse of the new talent.

Here at Holy Toledo it is also time to take a look at this year’s offseason acquisitions. As you will see I have been busy adding many interesting items to the vast collection of vintage sports video. Some of these are quite rare and very exciting “finds” for us collectors and fans.

Here some of the highlights:
-Derrick Thomas NFL record 7 sacks in one game
-Infamous botched Thanksgiving OT coin toss call
-Final game ever at Metropolitan Stadium (Minnesota)
-Terrell Ownes stomps on the Dallas star
-Tony Dorsett’s 1st & 2nd pro TD
-Bill Parcells favorite game ever (besides his SB wins)
-A chunk of games from the 1981 “Air Coryell” Chargers season
-Beautiful high quality upgrades of Holy Toledo proportion
-Cool and Rare USFL games, including Jim Kelly

“What If?”
Have you ever wondered what would have happened had the Browns ever actually beaten the Broncos in any of their AFC Championship battles? How would history have changed had Cleveland gone to a Super Bowl?

The answer may be found in the 1987 week 12 game where the Browns visited the 49ers. Both teams were playing at an elite level, led by championship caliber quarterbacks and rugged defenses. The Sunday Night Football marquee may have read “Montana vs. Kosar”, but this nationally televised game had Super Bowl quality pedigree. It also just might have the answer to Cleveland’s question, “What if?”

WHEN IS A VCR NOT A VCR?

Yes I did say vcr, some people still use those old things.

A good friend from Kansas City sent me some of his old vhs tapes to dub to dvd.

What I discovered was a beautiful collection of vhs tapes that looked like they we from yesterday, not 25-30 years old. I was amazed by the quality of these recordings.

My friend has not just any ordinary vcr, this one was a “Super VCR” with a big “S” on it! I’ve been doing this for many years and this vcr was special.

His collection had an array of goodies, such as postseason games from 1988. Many great Joe Montana games when he wore the KC Chiefs uniform, plus some interesting local KC pre & postgame footage.

Joe’s 1st 4th quarter comeback as a Chief,
huge rivalry games,
two Hall of Fame matchups,
beautiful throwback uniforms, and
two thrill-packed Oilers vs. Browns games that took place on back-to-back weekends in the winter of 1988.

The first game provides you with one last look at the heroics of the “super-sub” QB Don Strock, along with an announcer who loses his sh** over a bad call. The second game is an AFC Wild Card battle showing off the talents of Warren Moon. Both recordings are very high quality and filled with excitement from one of the games legendary venues, Municipal Stadium.

You might be thinking “I already have some of those games”.
Yes, but you haven’t seen these beautiful versions.
All thanks to my friend and his “Super VCR”

“Look, up in the sky”
“It’s a bird”
“It’s a plane”
“No it Super VCR!”

For us old collectors of vintage sports video there is nothing more disappointing to get a new game in the mail and find that it is terrible quality.

Some people recorded games on an old vhs tape that their wife let them use, after she had already used it to record Days Of Our Lives 150 times. It was too old for her, but it was okay for your “stupid” football.

Well not this guy. Mt friend from KC recorded games on his Super VCR using virgin vhs tapes, and , well it shows. The results are in the final product.

I welcome any of you to send me your vhs tapes, I will gladly edit and dub them to dvd for you. Anybody can buy a vhs to dvd machine, but lets be honest. Most often those machines are low quality vcr players, with no tracking adjustments, and they record in low quality mode onto a dvd. It pays to have high end technology

Just ask the Super VCR!

Sincerely,
Bill
from Holy Toledo!

Greatest Quarterback Duels In NFL History, plus a few others

Recently debated was the topic of “The Greatest Quarterback Duels’”, which included yet another Top 10 List. I grabbed my pen and wrote them down, wanting to see how many of these games I had in my vintage video collection. Turns out that I have 9 of the 10, and the Game Of The Week Show of the 10th game.

The list was full of great duels, however there were a few I thought were omitted. I’ve added my two cents, and I thought you may wish to add your thoughts as well. As it turns out I have 9 of the 10, but I also have many more that should have been included in this list.

Any 2 games for $22
Any 5 for $45
Any 10 for $75

du·el
A formal combat with weapons between two opponents, usually fought in the presence of witnesses.

The word actually dates back to Medieval Times, which is fitting. I could see Stabler brandishing his shield and sword, Marino seems more like a flail and spear guy, and Montana would need something more complex like a crossbow. Whereas Joe Kapp is definitely a battle ax.

With that said here is the Top 10 Quarterback Duels.

#10
1992 Wk2 Buffalo at San Francisco, on 2 DVDs
The “No Punt Game” featuring two Hall of Fame quarterbacks. Steve Young rolls up almost 600 yards of offense, Jim Kelly almost 500, and they both toss 3 TD’s. A 34-31 thriller with three 2nd Half lead changes.

#9
2009 Wk11 Cleveland at Detroit, on 2 DVDs
Not all great duels are fought by legendary quarterbacks. In his rookie season Matthew Stafford leads a furious comeback, only to have Brady Quinn recapture the lead. In a wild finish Stafford throws a TD pass with no time remaining to win it 38-37. Both QB’s combine for 9 TD passes in an extremely entertaining contest.

#8
1994 Wk1 New England at Miami, on 3 DVDs
Two gunslingers taking shots at each other all afternoon. Drew Bledsoe stakes his team to an early lead, Dan Marino fires back, and Drew returns fire. What follows is a back and forth gun fight at the Orange Bowl, including three more lead changes in the 4th Quarter! Hall of Fame field generals Bill Parcells and Don Shula wage war in a game stuffed full with 997 total yards, and 9 TD passes. A legendary 39-35 shootout that I may have had a bit higher on this list.

#7
2009 Wk10 New England at Indianapolis, on 2 DVDs
You had to expect that whoever finalized this list would include Brady versus Manning. Of the many games to chose from this is a pretty good one.

When Randy Moss catches a TD pass from Tom Brady to give the Patriots a 31-14 lead in the 4th quarter, crusty old Bill Belichick thinks his lead is safe. The undefeated Colts have other plans, which includes 14 points in the final 2:23. With only 13 seconds left Peyton Manning throws his 4th TD pass of the day to give the Colts an amazing 35-34 comeback win.

Note: To Raider Fans
You will not find a single Raiders game on this list. I remind you that I did not choose these games, I am merely reporting them. Later this week I will release my own Top 10 Raiders QB Duels list. I would have included it in this article but I didn’t want to overwhelm you with too much chewy goodness.

#6
1983 Wk7 Washington at Green Bay MNF, on 2 DVDs
This game is often discussed so I recently broke out the dvds and watch it again. A phenomenal football game from start to finish.

It is fitting that the highest scoring game in the history of Monday Night Football would be played at Lambeau Field. Bart Starr’s Packers, led by a very underrated QB Lynn Dickey, outscore the champion Redskins 48-47 in a game for the ages. Heroic efforts by Joe Theisman, Gerry Ellis, and great kickers Jan Stenerud & Mark Moseley. Both teams combine for 31 points, and an incredible five lead changes in the 4th quarter.

#5
1987 AFC Championship Cleveland at Denver, on 2 DVDs
Really, this is #5? I would have selected the ’86 game over this one.

Everyone remembers “The Fumble’, but what most fans tend to forget is that Bernie Kosar led the Browns to 30 points in the 2nd Half. With the season on the line both quarterbacks delivered when it mattered most, Elway & Kosar each throwing 3 TD passes in this historic battle for AFC supremacy.

Honorable Mention:
Before we get to the top 4, let’s consider a couple games that in my opinion deserved serious consideration. See what you think…

-2011 NFC Divisional New Orleans at San Francisco, on 2 DVDs
After three quarters this game was a tight struggle, the 49ers leading 20-14. What followed was arguably one of the most exciting 4th Quarters ever. In the final 4 minutes Drew Brees and Alex Smith gave us four lead changing touchdowns. When Jimmy Graham caught a 66 yard bomb with just over a minute left it appeared to be over. Somehow Alex Smith had the 49ers in position for a long tying field goal. With the clock ticking down and everyone thinking overtime, Alex hits Vernon Davis for the game winning TD. Truly a fantastic finish.

-2004 Wk12 Cleveland at Cincinnati, on 3 DVDs
The names Kelly Holcomb and Carson Palmer don’t exactly conjure up images of great quarterback duels. However the 65,677 who attended this game at Paul Brown Stadium on the Sunday after Thanksgiving 2004 may suggest to you otherwise. For they witnessed one of the truly incredible offensive explosions in NFL history. This wild 58-48 game was loaded full of huge plays and excitement. The 106 total points scored places this game as the 2nd highest ever. Only a 1966 game between the Giants and Redskins ranks higher. When we last saw the scoreboard operator he was battered, bruised, and bloody. A game you have to see to believe.

OK let us proceed with the list…

#4
1972 Wk2 New York Jets at Baltimore Colts (G.O.Week only)
Unfortunately there is no known copy of the television broadcast of this legendary game. All we have is the NFL Game Of The Week show. It’s “The Rematch”, Joe Namath versus Johnny Unitas, Weeb Ewbank vs. Don Shula. Johnny U has a great day, but Joe Willie has one of his best days ever, 496 yards and 6 TD passes! The end result is another Jets win over the Colts in a wild 44-34 old school dogfight.

#3
Super Bowl XIII Pittsburgh vs. Dallas, on 3 DVDs
The quality of this recording is excellent, and it includes halftime, postgame & commercials.

On the game’s biggest stage both Roger Staubach & Terry Bradshaw came up big. They combined for 7 TD passes in this 35-31 barn burner. When TE Jackie Smith dropped that famous pass, that touchdown would have made the score 28-21 in the 3rd quarter. Instead the Cowboys had to settle for a field goal.
Might those extra 4 points have made a difference? We will never know. Staubach rallied his troops on a furious comeback that came up just 4 point short. A great game between two legends.

#2
2009 NFC Wild Card Green Bay at Arizona, on 2 DVDs
This is one of my favorite playoff games of all-time just because it was so damn exciting. You have the old veteran Kurt Warner vs. the kid Aaron Rodgers. You would have to be a complete curmudgeon, or a defensive coordinator, to not like a game that is at one point tied 45-45 headed to overtime. Then just to demonstrate that anything is possible, the game ends on a defensive turnover.

Warner hits Larry Fitzgerald on a 33 yard TD pass and their 3rd quarter lead looks good. However we are all about to learn a valuable lesson about the kid Aaron Rodgers, never count him out. Four quick touchdown drives later and, just like that, this game is tied 38-38. There is still almost 11 minutes left, how the hell did he do that?

As if to say “hey Kid this is my town”, the Old Veteran tosses another TD pass. As he walks off the field he glances over at The Kid and says “That’s how it’s done”. The Kid however is brash, “You may be wise old man but I have something that you don’t, youth!”, and he fires a TD pass of his own. The Old Vet smiles and knows The Kid may have come of age today, but he still has one more lesson to learn. And so it was that just a short time later that valuable lesson was revealed to The Kid, revealed rather rudely by a southern gentleman named Dansby.

Final Score: Cardinals 51, Packers 45

And now, without further ado…

#1
1986 Wk3 Miami at New York Jets, on 3 DVDs
I have a newly upgraded beautiful quality copy of this great game, it includes halftime, postgame & commercials.

A conflict of epic proportion waged between two grand warriors, the Jets and the Dolphins. These bitter rivals square off in a game that will be remembered forever. Dan Marino and Ken O’Brien scored more often than the guy who took Linda Lovelace to the prom. After 7 TD’s were scored in the 1st Half, this game would go on to be tied at 31-31, 38-38-, and 45-45 before it went into overtime. The Football Gods would never allow this herculean struggle to be decided by the foot of a kicker, and so it was to be on this seventh day of the second week of the 1986 season.

An avalanche of scoring, both combatants combining for 1066 total yards, 10 TD passes, 5 players had more than 100 yards including Wesley Walker, who caught only 6 passes but had 194 yards & 4 TD’s. After watching this game even the spectators need a Gatorade bath.

Well what do you think? A tremendous list of spectacular games, no doubt, but how does a list like this not include these games:

-1981 AFC Divisional San Diego at Miami, on 2 DVDs
I have acquired a beautiful new 2 disc version of this game that is the best quality version I’ve ever seen.

Dan Fouts & Kellen Winslow blow up the Dolphins early, only to have the “Super Sub” Don Strock lead the Fish back in one of the most incredible playoff games in NFL history.

-1992 AFC Wild Card Houston at Buffalo, on 2 DVDs
How do you not include the great comeback game? For almost three quarters Warren Moon was as hot as a fox in a forest fire. Like a light switch this game turned, and Frank Reich orchestrated the greatest comeback in playoff history.

Ready To Go Packages of QB Duels:

Russell Wilson vs. Tom Brady Battles
Over the past few years we have seen some great games featuring Russell Wilson versus Tom Brady. We all know the story, neither QB was highly regarded out of college. Since Wilson was selected with the 75th pick of the 2012 Draft, they have faced each other three times. All have been epic games.

Their first meeting back in 2012 gave us a glimpse of things to come. The rookie Wilson led his Seahawks to a dramatic come from behind win in what was considered at the time to be a huge upset. We will all remember Super Bowl XLIX, “just hand the ball to Beast Mode”. Their last battle came on a Sunday night last season in Foxboro, a fantastic game that featured 7 lead changes.

2012 Wk6 New England at Seattle on 2 DVDs
Super Bowl XLIX New England vs. Seattle on 4 DVDs
2016 Wk10 Seattle at New England SNF on 2 DVDs
Any 2 games for $16, or all 3 for $21

New England Super Bowl Collection
All five games went down to the wire, including the first overtime game in Super Bowl history. Close your eyes and hold your nose if you aren’t a Patriots fan, rejoice in the glory if you are…

Super Bowl XXXVI New England vs. St. Louis on 3 DVDs
Super Bowl XXXVIII New England vs. Carolina on 3 DVDs includes “Nip Slip”
Super Bowl XXXIX New England vs. Philadelphia on 2 DVDs
Super Bowl XLIX New England vs. Seattle on 4 DVDs
Super Bowl XLI New England vs. Atlanta on 5 DVDs
Any 2 for $23, or all 5 for $50

*** College Football 2 Packs *****

Michigan vs. Iowa Two Pack
When Iowa narrowly upset Jim Harbaugh’s Michigan team last fall it reminded many old Hawkeyes of the big upset of 1985. That game, referred to as “The Poll Bowl”; also took place in Iowa City, but the coaches back then were Haden Fry and Bo Schembechler. The Wolverines QB that day was none other than Jim Harbaugh, while Iowa was led by Chuck Long and Ronnie Harmon. Both of these games were thrillers that came down to the last seconds.

1985 #2 Michigan at #1 Iowa on 2 DVDs
2016 #2 Michigan at Iowa on 2 DVDs
Both games for only $14

USC vs. UCLA Two Pack
When I think of these two cross-town rivals I think of warm sunny afternoons, green grass, beautiful cheerleaders, and exciting football. I think of O.J., Marcus Allen, Lynn Swann, Freeman McNeil, Ronnie Lott, and Kenny Easley. Great coaches like John McKay, Tommy Prothro, Terry Donohue, and John Robinson. Here are 7 games to choose from from 5 different decades.

1967 #1 UCLA at #4 USC
1968 #1 USC at UCLA
1973 UCLA at USC on 4 DVDs A+ quality
1980 USC at UCLA on 2 DVDs
1981 UCLA at USC on 2 DVDs
1990 USC at UCLA *rebroadcast
2015 UCLA at USC on 2 DVDs

The U.S.F.L. Is Not Dead Here! A Look Back After 34 Years

Do you remember where you were, or what you were doing 34 years ago this week? I can offer an assist if you aren’t good at math. That would be the week of March 6th thru the 12th, 1983.

What was going on back then?
In the NFL it was all about The Fun Bunch, The Hogs, John Riggins and Joe Theisman. They were the toast of Washing and the NFL world because they had just won Super Bowl XVII. But that is not why I asked the question.

The band Men At Work were singing “Down Under” and Michael Jackson had a new #1 hit titled “Billie Jean”. At the box office we were all watching Return Of The Jedi, and the price of gas was $0.95 per gallon. But again, that is not why I asked where you were 34 years ago this week.

Officially the date was Sunday, March 6th, 1983.
The birth of the United States Football League.

Twelve brand new teams would play five games that day, and one game on Monday, marking the beginning of a whole new concept for fans, Spring football. The premier game would be televised on ABC as the Washington Federals hosted the Chicago Blitz at RFK Stadium. It was billed as “Coach George Allen returns to RFK”. If you’ll recall Allen had a very successful seven year run as head coach of the Redskins before being let go after the 1977 season. The Federals had signed a star running back from SMU named Craig James.

What followed was three amazing years of entertaining football that introduced us to guys named Bobby Hebert, Jim Mora, Sam Mills, Gary Anderson, and many others. It also gave guys like Anthony Carter, Doug Flutie, and Albert Bentley the opportunity to prove NFL scouts wrong. The USFL also had it’s share of stars. Herschel Walker, Steve Young, Reggie White, Jim Kelly, and Mike Rozier, just to name a few.

The original twelve teams were:
Arizona Wranglers
Birmingham Stallions
Boston Breakers
Chicago Blitz
Denver Gold
Los Angeles Express
Michigan Panthers (I loved their uniforms!)
New Jersey Generals
Oakland Invaders
Philadelphia Stars
Tampa Bay Bandits
Washington Federals

The USFL league champions and MVP’s:
1983
Michigan Panthers
Kelvin Bryant RB Philadelphia Stars
1984
Philadelphia Stars
Jim Kelly QB Houston Gamblers
1985
Baltimore Stars
Herschel Walker RB New Jersey Generals

For those of us in Oakland the Invaders came at a great time. The Raiders had left for Los Angeles the year before, and there was a void that the USFL filled nicely. Also Spring football for some cities was outstanding. Other cities were less fortunate, poor weather being the cause of poor attendance. Oakland was terrific in April, May and June. I can easily recall a warm Saturday evening at the Coliseum watching Herschel Walker and Anthony Carter do battle. I proudly admit that I was an Oakland Invaders season ticket holder, and I attended their first game in Oakland on March 13, 1983. Somewhere I even have a copy of the gameday program from that game called “Kickoff”.

There are many of us who loved the USFL, it gave us a local team to identify with, and many hours of football to watch during the time we used to call the “off-season”. The league is still missed, and I am convinced that Spring football would have succeeded over time.

Unfortunately the league failed for several reasons. Team owner spent far more than their television deals compensated them, and a failed lawsuit vs. the NFL proved to be a fatal blow. In the end it is but a footnote in football history, but for those three years it gave many of us a great deal of entertainment.

Being an avid collector of vintage sports video you had to know that I have a decent collection of USFL games on DVD. I would like to expand my collection, so I am open to trading if someone out there has any USFL games. I can even convert those old vhs tapes to dvd for you, if that is what you need.

At this moment here is my list of USFL games on DVD:

Complete 2016-17 College Football Bowl Lineup

Filed under: College Football, Uncategorized — Bill @ 2:16 pm

Unless you are like me and enjoy watching vintage racing videos, most racing fans get a little antsy this time of year. Where might they turn their attention? College Bowl games.

Meanwhile college football fans will have 41 Bowl games to feast upon this holiday season. The games kick off on Saturday December 17th , and culminate with the National Championship Game on Monday night January 9th.

Once again the CFP Semifinal games will take place on New Year Eve. Alabama takes on Washington in the Peach Bowl, while Clemson plays Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl. Last year these semifinal games suffered poor TV rating because of the New Years Eve date, and I suspect it will happen again. This is why we study history in school, so as not to repeat the errors of the past.

Because New Years Day falls on a Sunday, in order to not compete with the NFL, there will be no college Bowl games that day. Instead the four traditional Bowl games (Outback, Cotton, Rose & Sugar) will be played on Monday January 2nd. The Orange Bowl will be played of Friday December 30th. Notably absent from the Bowl lineup this year is Notre Dame.

Get ready to cook some chicken wings, pour a frosty cold beverage, and enjoy some college football.

Big News In Vintage Sports Videos at Holy Toledo!

Big news in the world of vintage sports video! Three games that were never known to exist have surfaced. Granted these may not be perhaps the most sacred of games, but they are important to those who collect the old Monday Night Football games.

1981 Week 4 L.A. at Chicago MNF
1981 Week 15 Atlanta at L.A. MNF
1984 Week 2 Pittsburgh at NY Jets TNF

Also recently discovered is a beautiful recording of a game in which an NFL record was set. Well several records actually. We hear so many numbers in football sometimes they don’t always sink in, but consider these eye popping gems.

In 1979 the Rams defense had the game of a lifetime. They held the Seahawks to
-7 total yards in one game
Only 1 1st down
-30 yards passing in an entire game
The Seahawks managed only 2 completions the entire day!

It is a given that I love to watch or listen to these old games. The old announcers bring back so many memories, and I love the look of the old stadiums like Shea, or Memorial Stadium in Baltimore (their field was not a field of grass, let’s just be honest and call it what it was… dirt). What I love about watching a game from Memorial Stadium is the sound. If you listen carefully you hear their famous band, the old school cheerleaders, the crowd noise is so intimate you can hear individuals as they cheer on their favorite players. It is unlike anything you hear today, it’s a throwback to a different time, and no blaring music!

This latest version of “What’s New” is a particular favorite of mine because of it’s diversity. It is loaded with not only vintage TV broadcasts, but a great radio broadcast, and a few fantastic sports documentaries that you will love.

Highlights of “What’s New” include:

-Do you remember Brian Sipe and the “Kardiac Kids”?
Well I found the game that started it all in week 1 of 1979. Yes I know officially the Kardiac Kids are considered to be the 1980 Browns, of which I have many of their games, but where it all began was on a September day at Shea.

-One of the great baseball games of the 1970’s took place at Riverfront Stadium. It was the deciding game 5 of the National League Championship. The Pirates were only three outs away from the World Series. What occurs in the bottom of the 9th inning in the stuff of legends, topped off with one of the most bizarre endings to a Championship Series ever. No TV broadcast is known to exist, but I found the original Reds radio broadcast featuring a very young Al Michaels & Joe Nuxhall. It even includes some postgame. This a a great one.

-“Finley’s Heroes” The Story of the 1972 Oakland A’s
The audio recording of the LP that was sold in 1972. It tells the story of the upstart A’s, featuring the radio calls of Monte Moore. This was a really cool and rare find.

-Many interesting football games from the 1970’s

Holy Toledo! New Bill King! End Of Summer Special on Vintage Sports DVDs

Are You Ready For Some Football?
I am.

$7 each for anything you see on this list.
Minimum order of 3 items.

Hey there old friends, been a long summer, I’ve seen too many bikinis to discuss.
Wait until you see what I uncovered recently in the wide wacky wonderful world of vintage sports on dvd.

First off, in honor of the man Mr. Holy Toledo himself, I have some new Bill King recordings.
It is so damn good it will bring a tear to yur eye.

Speaking of legendary announcers, and legendary games…
Would you like to hear the 1972 ALCS Game 5 entire game featuring the legendary Ernie Harwell?
We have it here at Holy Toledo!

There is some really cool NFL Highlights that feature some rare Raiders stuff,
Madden’s 100th win,
the Raiders 1st OT game.

NFL TV broadcasts include perhaps the best single game example of “Air Coryell,
an upgrade on a classic Raider-Broncos game,
an upgrade of Bo’s 1st game,
plus many other cool NFL gems.

Like College Football?
Wait until you see what I uncovered.
If you are a Cornhuskers fan hold on to your jeans.
How about some rare Auburn Tigers Pat Sullivan TV coverage?
A great Earl Campbell game, a kid named Mike Singletary, Bear Bryant historic games.
The list goes on and on.

How about a young kid name Elway knocking off the #1 team in the country.
National Championships, Charles Woodson, and rare footage of the final days of Aaron Rodgers at Cal.

Do you remember Sunday morning in the 1970’s…
The Notre Dame highlight shows with Lindsay Nelson & Paul Hornung,
I found some beauties!

Like Basketball?
Rare, Dr. J, Rick Barry, Alvin Adams & Paul Westphal.
How abot one of the greatest NCAA Tournament games ever in it’s entirety?
2005 Regional Finals Illinois vs. Arizona, arguably one of the greatest games ever.

Rare 1976 World Series games Reds vs. Yankees

You throw in some newly found drag races,
some old boat drags with Eddie Hill (who doesn’t love 200 M.P.H. on the water?)

Reminds you once again why you love to watch the great announcers, the names you grew up with, the legends, it’s all found in Vintatge Sports Video here at Holy Toledo!

Share among your friends, find old classics, and always record everything in the best quality mode possible.. If history has taught us anything, we have learned that a high quality recording of a great moment is worth far more than one vhs tape, or a few dvds.

Sincerely,
Bill

“There’s a Snake in the Hall!” Ken Stabler is in the Hall of Fame

Filed under: College Football, NFL, Oakland Raiders, Uncategorized — Bill @ 11:43 am

Kenny “Snake” Stabler

Hall of Fame
Super Bowl Champion
NFL MVP
NCAA College Football National Champion

In this collection of pics we have great shots, iconic moments, his kids, and the famous “Two Minute Warning” painting. He was the great quarterback I’ve ever met. The last time I saw Kenny he was driving off in a brand new convertible Corvette with a big grin on his face, and that is how I will always remember him.

What’s New In Vintage Sports Video for 2016!

While everyone was off celebrating for the holidays and drinking champagne to toast the new year Holy Toledo was busy finding new gems in the wonderful wacky wild world of vintage sports video.

With so many new items to describe, it is difficult to determine what to highlight first. I suppose it would be best to begin with games that were never knew existed before. Take for example the really cool version of the 1980 week 12 matchup between the two teams that would eventually meet in the Super Bowl Oakland at Philadelphia. This is a really nice copy and an excellent game. Raider fans have been searching for this one for many years.

Raiders fans also might take note of the two new nice quality upgrades from 1982, 1983, 2000, and 2004.

There are a few new Monday Night & Thursday Night football games from the Howard Cosell era that have been discovered.

If you are a fan of Billy Sims or the Lions, take note that I have found copies of his first few NFL games, and he came into the league with a big splash!

Speaking of 1980, you will see that I added more games of a couple really fun teams to watch, the “Cardiac Kids” of Cleveland led by Brian Sipe, and Bartkowski’s high flying Falcons.

If you love overtime thrillers take note of the two great games from week 8 and 9, 2001. These were the two weeks in a row that the bears won back-to-back overtime games because of a linebacker named Mike Brown. As good as the 49ers at Bears game is, the Browns at Bears game the following week is even better. And wait until you see the quality of that Browns-Bears game, it is spectacular.

Speaking o beautiful quality… I picked up a really nice copy of the Cleveland Browns final game at the old Municipal Stadium (1995) before they moved to Baltimore. This copy also includes local pre and postgame coverage. A must have for any true Browns fan.

Do you remember a guy they called “The Nigerian Nightmare”? His name is Christian Okoye, and during his prime he was about as dominating and scary a running back to ever play the game. I picked up some of his best games from 1989 and 1990.

There are just too many goodies to mention them all so simply scour the list below to see what is new from Holy Toledo! In addition to the NFL games you will find some rare college football, a few whopper of baseball games, along with basketball and racing. As always feel free to email me with any questions.

Sincerely,
Bill
from Holy Toledo!

If You Love Vintage Sports You Will Want To See What’s New From Holy Toledo!

As we enter the 11th month on 2015 it is time to begin preparing for the holiday season, clean your gutters, find your favorite turkey recipe, and stock up on vintage sports videos! Well hey, that’s what I do.

You know me, I’m always adding to the massive sports video collection. My newest batch of games contain some remarkable items, including one thing I thought I would never own. A game with the legendary coach Vince Lombardi!

I’ve discovered a huge lot of games from the great West Coast rivalry of the LA Rams versus the San Francisco 49ers. As the old saying goes “these two teams just do not like each other”, and it shows in these great games.

If you like defense hide your eyes, I have many games with almost 1000 yards of offense, including several of the highest scoring games ever.

Need some miracle finishes for the holidays? One need look no further, there are many fantastic finishes &on this list. Craving a comeback? How about Elway’s 1st ever 4th quarter comeback? That’s here.

Want to show your grandkids why Staubach, Montana & Fouts were so good? Have they ever seen an actual game with Earl Campbell, Walter Payton, or this guy who used to wear funny looking goggles named Dickerson? Maybe you simply prefer the 1970’s style of hard nosed football? Teach them the story about the Cardiac Kids by showing them a game. Want to see a young college freshman named Hershel or Bo? Or maybe you would like to see the last game played at Shea Stadium or the first one at Three Rivers? It’s here. In fact if one were to look thru my entire “2015 UPDATED FOOTBALL LIST” (which I can send you via email), you would find just about every major moment in football history live as it occurred.

TWO HOLIDAY SPECIALS!
